What do I need to know?

  • When you are decorating please remember the over all theme of the shard. Think medieval, gritty, dirty, realistic. Keep it good looking! If you are not sure what good looking is just copy what you have see done on other placers that looked good!
  • Don't spend huge amounts of time making one little area perfect or supper detailed. Just toss in some decorations so it looks good & unique and move on. If we spend a tone of time on each area we will never get done with everything!
  • If you give your player characters any items while a staff member, another player items, or edit anything of a player you will be banned!! Just want to put that out there so its clear!! haha
  • Don't bother setting any special names or tweaking an item. When it gets frozen all extra stuff is lost.
  • Don't bother adding doors. Doors have to be moved or deleted before the freeze. If you freeze a door it becomes static and wont open

How does decorating work?

Decorating is pretty strait forward.

  • 1) You add a ‘static’ item in game through one of several methods.
  • 2) You record the general location were you decorated.
  • 3) A higher level staff member comes in behind you and ‘freezes’ the items into the map files
  • 4) The new map files are then distributed out to all the players so they can see the newly edited maps.

What do you mean by a 'static' item?

There are a couple different ways to get items into the game. All these items are stored in game files called MUL files. But you need to know not all of these methods of adding items into the game can actually be frozen into the map MUL files!!

  • (BAD) The first way of getting an item into the game is be creating a ‘item scripts’. Item scripts are great! When you type [add apple and target the ground you are using a script to do this. There is actually a script on the server for that apple. What you need to know is these types of items can NOT, I repeat, can NOT be frozen into the map MUL files!!! So do NOT use them!! This also included addons! Anything that is scripted can NOT be frozen ever.
  • (GOOD) The second way is adding manual adding the item in game via a command. For example if you typed [add static 0x09D0 you would add a static apple!!! This type of item CAN be frozen into the map MUL files!! I will explain how to get these numbers later by using a program called UO Fiddler.
  • (GOOD) And lastly, the third way to is by using a program call Pandoras Box. This is just a program that has a number of pre-setup static 0x1234 items in it already. Its fine to use most of the items in here. But just remember, a lot of our custom artwork has not been added to it yet! This program is also supper hand for moving and adjusting the location of an item.

How do I use UO Fiddler?

  • UO Fiddler - Best program for viewing & adding all the static artwork.
  • Start by installing it.
  • Open it > Settings > Path Settings > Set Path Manual: find your game dir > OK > [X] > Re-open UO Fiddler > When you click the [Items] tab you should see items. If you don’t go look at your game path again.
  • Adding a item in game. Click [Items] tab > select an item > on the right it will say, Graphic: 0x1234. In game type [add static 0x1234 and click some were to add the item!
  • When you are done with an area type [where and give us the map cords for that location. If you forget to do this that area will NEVER get frozen becase we wont know that its even there!

How do I use Pandoras Box?

  • PandorasBox - Careful to use only static items with this one. We have a custom file for this. Ask about it.
  • Stat by installing it.
  • Open it > click New > Next > enter a profile name > target your client Dir > Custom Maps: Yes > Next > Next > Next > Finish
  • You will pretty much only be working in the [Deco] tab.
  • In the first box are +/- menus with items.
  • Box to the right of that is the actually item you pick.
  • [Add] will add 1x of them
  • [Tile] will tile a bunch of the same item. Make sure you PRATICE with how it works before you go and tile something!!!
  • the [0] to the right of the [Tile] button will increase or decries the elevation of the item when its tiles. If you are going to try and use that do a [where to find out the map’s height range.
  • [X] Static ... Must ALWAYS be checked
  • Don’t mess with hueing. I don’t think Hueing can be frozen.
  • [X] Rnd [4] will give you 4 random items starting from item you have selected. Test before use!
  • Nudge +/- will move a item up or down by that number. Very helpful.
  • The arrow keys will move a item around. Very helpful.
  • When you are done with an area type [where and give us the map cords for that location. If you forget to do this that area will NEVER get frozen becase we wont know that its even there!
