Phaere: /* See Also */

“A wise warrior fights with both weapon and intellect.”<br>
“An even wiser warrior fights with a shield as well.”

Parrying is used to <i>completely block</i> melee blows or archery shots from opponents. In usual practise you must equip a Shield in order to parry - Which type doesn't make a difference (unless the item has an additionally listed Defense Chance Increase bonus).

If you fail to parry, a shield offers no protection aside from any Item Properties it might have displayed (such as Resistances).

As a character gains in Parry as well as Bushido, the system changes somewhat: Your chance to block with a shield falls, and instead you gain the ability to parry with a sword. An additional bonus is granted if the weapon is double handed.

This skill also counts towards your ability to perform Special Moves.

Training
While your Parrying ability can be improved during your day-to-day adventuring, it can takes months upon months to reach Grandmaster (let alone the higher levels). By dedicating time specifically to the skill it can reach its peak within a few hours. If you wish to also train Bushido it is advised to train Parry first.

Put on a suit of armor to get as much Physical Resistance as possible. As you'll be taking plenty of damage, Durability is a factor - either bring several sets of expendable items or items with the Self Repair property (three or above is excellent). The Virtue Armor Set is great for situations such as this, though it's quite possible to train wearing no armor at all. Reactive Armor can be used to gain a small bonus for "free".

More importantly, collect several shields of any type (keeping in mind these will also be taking a large hit to durability) and find some sparring partners.

The goal here is to receive incoming melee blows as fast as possible. Every time a creature would land a strike against you, you have a chance to parry (and therefore gain). The more Dexterity your creature of choice has the faster it'll be able to attack you - The more Wrestling ability, the more likely it'll land an accurate blow. You should, of course, avoid wearing armor with the Defense Chance Increase property, though you might find Hit Point Regeneration invaluable.

Sheep are a traditional choice (as they deal negligible damage), while Spectral Spellbinders will offer faster strikes (and impressive Resisting Spells gains). Lizardmen are again more powerful, though keep in mind you'll gain little skill while dead. Be sure to stay out of combat mode after engaging your targets to avoid killing them (even unarmed your strikes will add up over time).

At the most you'll be able to have nine creatures attacking you at once (eight surrounding you and one in the same tile as your character). Be sure to have a sustainable method of keeping your Hit Points above zero; bring hundreds of Bandages or cast healing spells (remembering to prepare Protection first). Of course if you can find another player to stay with you for support, you'll find it far easier to stay alive (and sane). Or if you have Necromancy you can cast Horrific Beast and your heath will regenerate at 2hp/s.

Training Method 2:

0-85 Have access to your house or a friends house readily available and shield with at least 3 Self Repair. Now, find any low level animal (sheep, dogs, cats, etc. I prefer to use wolves) and aggro it towards you. This will mean going into war mode and double clicking said creature. Before the creature gets to attacking you, make sure of these things: 1) You are standing on the stairs of the house in front of the door. (this is so that you can move one tile away and heal if need be without the creature following you) 2) Have your shield equipped and NOT a weapon. 3) A full HP regen suit helps, but always makes sure you have a guaranteed method of healing. Note that this part is extremely important because it will keep you from dying and having to find a healer.

85-100 Use the exact same setup as above, however, switch out to an ogre or a troll in order to start getting gains. It is more important now to have a method of healing than it was before because these can hit much harder than a wolf can and often do. Remember that the doorway is there in the event that you need to step away for a few seconds and heal.

See Also
* Shields
* Bushido
* Defense Chance Increase

parry change esp for UORP:

parry with using a shield (opposed to bushido parry with a 2handed sword/ one handed + empty hand) will increase your phys resist cap by 1 / 10 parry skill.
this is the ultimate tank skill, parry, shield AND NO bushido, at all, none, zip zero.

at 130 parry (+10 from an item), 140 is not possible, you will have a 83 phys resist cap and around 38% chance to completly block an incoming attack (you will need a decent dex score thou for the parry block chance). now, why no bushido ye ask? its a niffy skillset after all? simply because bushido will substract from you parry block chance with a shield equipped, and with no shield equipped you will lose the added phys resist cap. and well, the difference between 70 resist and 83 are very huge for the most common damage type (if ye look down in the bug report forum it took a while to get me over the line, but it definetly works nice now, ye trade a huge damage boost from perfection for a huge survivability boost).

UO Roleplay Specific – Using the Herbalism skill with a Boline tool will allow a player to gather herbs and regents from shrubs, bushes, grasses, and other small foliage items.

“Does this milk taste bad to you?”

There are few more perilous jobs in the world than that of “official taster.” But in Britannia, with a bit of skill in Herbalism, you can both protect yourself from “accidental” poisoning and keep track of your potions and potion kegs.

Herbalism allows players to detect the contents of an unknown potion keg or if food has had poison applied to it. It is considered a Useless Skill and the few players that undertake it do so for mainly roleplaying reasons.

Using
To use Herbalism to determine the contents of a Potion or Potion Keg, or to test your food for inadvertent poisoning:
* Click the blue gem next to the Herbalism skill on your skill list.
* Target the potion or food you wish to taste.
If successful, you are told what type of potion you tasted, or, if you tasted food, whether it is poisoned.

herbalism, the mages best complimentary skill, even with no skill in it.

herbalism allows you to use a bolina and harvest from the static flowers, mushrooms etc on the map, just use a boline and target the mushrooms or whatever.

at lower skill levels you will jsut harvest magery reagents, for almost free (well, it uses a charge from a boline), need some reagents? go find them yourself.

at higher skill levels next to this you can find all other sort of herbs on those mushrooms (if someone wonders, all herbnames were taken from 'the witcher'),

these herbs are all used in alchemy custom recipes and are needed for exotic potions like canned elementals and rebirth potions. to find the really nice ones, you will need 120 skill thou (it counts as a tradeskill thou, so a powerscroll is cheap to get).

at GM level and up, you will also find all the lumberjacking GM added things, bark, fungi, brilliant ambers etc.

now, to raise it, just sniff on a piece of cheese, fish steak, loaf of bread, lick a pear (e.g. just use taste id as it used to be). this will take ye up to GM ith still the same pear left (thou a bit sticky and wet now), after that, grab yer boline adn go out and harvest for gains

New Tools
Training
* 0 - 30: Can be trained at NPC Baker or Cook
* 0 - 75: Herbalism a piece of food (most commonly fishsteaks) that has been poisoned. One piece should get you to 75 though it slows significantly at 60 skill. Scrolls of Alacrity can make this much easier.
* 75 - 100: Currently there seems no way to gain above 75 through normal methods. Every item you taste starting at 75 will be too easy to get a gain from even a GGS. To get around this many use the satyr trick and SoTs.

Strum a lute, bang on a drum or rattle a tambourine. Without a bit of skill in Musicianship, you’ll likely send your audience screaming away from, or worse — toward you.

Musicianship is the core Bard-themed skill. It is required for any of the other Bard-related skills to even have a chance of success.

A modest level of Musicianship is also required for a Carpenter to be able to produce musical instruments, which feature a 10% success bonus over NPC-purchased musical instruments.

Uses
While it does little on it's own aside from producing either fine music or fat-fingered cacophony, it's level is a key factor when attempting to perform the other Bard skills, namely Provocation, Discordance or Peacemaking in conjunction with a target's Barding Difficulty.

In addition to influencing the level of success for the other Bardic skills, it also allows a character to use the Fire Horn.

barding skill usage has 2 skill checks, first one against your music skill to see if ye know which end of the lute is which, ye will always succeed this at 100 music, and then the actual skill which checks against the targets barding difficulty.

music skill above 100 adds to your other skillcheck succeschance, at a rate of 1% succes change for 1 point of music over 100. (the actual skill used improves the succes by 2% succesrate per point above barding diff). Still, music is a good boost for all barding skills AFTER yer training is done or at least in its final stages (when slower gains is preferable to swift death on failure), ye wont gain skill if a critter is trivial due to the music skill boost to succes, having lower succesrate is generally better for skill gains (because its hard enough to find repeatable targets for gains that is, esp at higher barding difficulty).

a slayer instrument adds another 20% succes chance to a skill used against slayer category, while an exceptionally crafted instrument will add a 10% succes increase against all creatures

(note, a 20% succes increase is like a 10% on the used skill increase, so at 120 provo, 120 music and a fitting slayer instrument, ye have a real skill check against 140 provo. trying to provoke 2 150 barding difficulty creatures then would mean you have a 30% succes chance. if your skill = the average barding difficulty, you have a 50% succes chance. Alas, in all my testing, i have not found evidence of a bane system on slayers here (as in, trying to provoke repond with undead slayer will have lower succes rate, still, it could be hidden, i never tried it in a testing section where the -20% succes would mean 'you have no chance'.

a note on barding difficulty, to know a creatures barding difficulty, you need animal lore, and to check on the more interesting ones, you need 120 animal lore, it is a very nice skill to have while training barding, it is a lot of qpts to get it up for temporary (thou very fast to gain nevertheless), ye might consider training it up to 100 and steal, beg or borrow for some animal lore jewelry thou, it will really help you on knowing your succesrate and thus not only gains, but a lot of interesting facts about creatures for later, especially a good incidcation of their barding difficulty to combine it with others for provo succesrate

Music may soothe the savage beast, but playing a few clashing notes will weaken even the strongest of creatures.
Using
To discord a creature you:
* Click the blue gem next to the skill on your skill list.
* Click on the creature you wish to discord.
If successful, your target will lose a percentage of its skills and stats. The percentage lost is dependant on your Discordance skill. For instance, at 50.0 skill, the target loses 10% from all stats and skills; and at 100.0 skill the target loses 20% from all stats and skills. Once the effect wears off, the target's skill and stats will return to normal. (Does not affect player characters.)
Range
The base range of all bard abilities is 8 tiles, with each 15 points of skill in the ability being used increasing this range by one tile. Bards must be within this range of the target to use the ability. Furthermore, the bard must remain within this range or the ability's effect ends.
Continuation
Once Discordance has been used on a target, the bard must remain alive, visible, and within range of the target or the effect ends. Regarding creatures with “Dragon AI” (such as daemons, drakes, hellhounds, nightmares, and, of course, dragons): if at any point the bard moves while using any barding song, that may compel the creature to retarget on the moving character.
Training
Discordance uses the same success/failure calcuation formula as Provocation, so training methods are identical in terms of what creatures to discord at what level.
You can train Discordance, as well as all bardic skills, up to 40 in New Haven, the sextant providing an approximative location at 86 S 146 E.

disco is amazingly fast to train, simply because ye need only one target and it refreshes very fast (2 seconds, opposed to provo's 10 seconds).

in despise ye can first do a normal ogre from the safe ledge, then an ogre lord and then ye have to find a paragon ogre, just keep on discording the same critter over and over and ye be done in no time, no need to go invis or whatever to break it, ye will gain on all failed attempts, and not use a use on a succes once it is discorded.

disco is also amazingly powerfull, you will decrease all of a creatures skills and resistances by your dicordance skill/5. this means, they have a lower chance to hit you (their wrestling just went down) you/ your pets/ your partymembers will do a lot more damage (especially notable on high resist creatures, ye wont notice it on a mongbat or orc or so) and as a result of lowering its skills, you will also lower their barding difficulty (thou that result is pretty small, still, its there). with high enough skill, you can disco bosses and there it really shines, even thou their barding diff of 160 or even --- (meaning invulnerable to peace and provo actually) will negate 50% of yer disco effect, yer 14% decrease in skills and resists is the difference between a hard fight and a pushover, on thier resists it is often 50% more damage done if not more (they often have around 70 resists, so the difference between 70 resist and 56 resist is huge). discording a boss is not easy thou, at 130 disco, 120 music and except instruments i manage it at about 1 in 5 tries, but once done, it will stick around for a good while.

Provocation

Using the Provocation skill, a player has a chance to make two creatures fight each other. It is one of the most powerful skills in the game.

Beware that if you fail the monsters will look for a new target, you.

Provocation is difficulty-based skill. Some monsters are much more difficult to provoke than others, depending on their Barding Difficulty.

Once two creatures are fighting each other, they will continue to do so until either the provoking bard leaves their line of sight or one is killed.

Training
Method 1
I have and always will use the boat method for training provoke.

Line up your boats so they are all next to each other lengthwise. So now you can open the plank for all 3 and walk across. Get on the middle boat and move it back about 3-4 tiles. Stand on the middle and put your targets on seperate ships.

:0-30 Purchase Training from an NPC bard or provoke birds, rabbits and other low-level wildlife
:30-40 Cows, Hinds, Sheep, most farm animals
:40-65 Bulls, Scorpions, Great Harts, Polar Bears, Gamans
:65-90 Giant Beetles (Best gains)
:90-100 Hiryus work great to break the 90 skill barrier.
:100-110 Cu Sidhes

Use a Crystal ball of Knowledge to test the difficulty of each creature. Switch between NPC-bought, Slayer and Exceptional items to get the instrument that yields "optimal" difficulty.

After 90, you will hit the skill barrier that so many skills have today.

A workaround for this is to use a slayer instrument that is not for the type of creature you are targeting. This will lower your displayed skill rating 20% on the successful use on a creature if it is not the type of your slayer. The Giant Beetles will take you to 110.0 using this method.

Good Bard Knowledge

A musical instrument obtained from a Carpenter with less than 80.0 skill or an NPC-bought instrument adds no benefits.

A GM Carpenter created instrument adds 10% to your success chance.

A Slayer Instrument adds 20% to your success chance if the creature type matches, or removes 20% if it doesn't match.

With 100.0 Musicianship, you will have a 100% chance to pass the first skill check when Provoking or Peacemaking. With higher than 100.0, you will have an even better chance, but this may actually slow your training in the skill.

Method 2
30-70 Use boats with Grizzly Bears

70-90 Go to one of the Plague Beast spawns near water, such as the swamp east of Britain or far west of Trinsic and place a boat. Move the boat out a little bit from the coast and lure 2 plague beasts to the edge of shore. Provoke them and they will fight as well as continue to make more and more spawn for you to gain on.

90-120 Move to Destard and work on Drakes, Wyverns and Dragons. This is VERY DANGEROUS as you can easily bring too much spawn towards you.

My thoughts, provocation is one of the most powerful skills in the game. At 120 provo and gm music, you have 100% chance to provoke 2 dragons. At gm provo and music, you only have a 60% chance. Provocation in combination with peacemaking is amazingly powerful, as creatures simply sit there until you provoke them.

Method 3
0 - 30 What? You can't afford to buy up to 30? OK, fair enough. Just head out to your local forest, Jhelom Farm or the Delucia cows area and provoke away, you should get there in no time.

30 - 40 Damwin Thicket in The Lost Lands will s ee you doing well sending headless against those strongbats, some of the tougher animals will get you gains too. If you want to move onto something with a bit more challenge, it's time to hit the cemeteries for those skeleton and zombies (watch the tougher undead)

40 - 50 The cemeteries are the place to be, wherever the lower level undead roam. Also those pesky Orcs (the footmen, watch their big bully commanders and elite warriors) and the annoying creatures that chase you around swamps will all help you gain at this level

50 - 60 Those cemeteries still look good, but aim for the wraiths, spectres etc now, and gains should keep coming. Also keep up with those orc camps, forts and caves, the swamps still look good, covetous level 1 has a good variety (but keep away from the gazers for now) and Despise Level 1 and 3 (although not earth el to earth el) and the ogres on level 4 should keep you amused for a while.

60 - 70 Covetous level 1, Despise Level 4 Trolls, Shame Level 1 & 2, The Ophidian Fortress and Terathan Keep (lower level Ophids and Terras are safest), Orc Forts, the City of The Dead, Fire Level 1 and Ice Level 1 and even the Jungles. Just remember stay away from the upper level creatures, or at least provoke them onto small creatures, and you have a lot of variety here.

70 - 80 You can continue to work all the areas in the previous level, just go for the tougher creatures to keep the gains going. As well as those locations, add also Titan Valley and Wyvern Isle.

80 - 90 Titan Valley, Wyvern Isle, Shame Level 4 and 5, Wrong, The Lich Forest at Yew, The Trinsic Passage to the Lost Lands, Covetous level 2, Wind, Fire Temple, Ophidian and Terathan strongholds and Despise Level 4.

All of these places have good gain potential, just remember that many of the weaker creatures you are now just too good for, and you need to set them against the bigger creatures for best gain potential. Also, the sweet spot for gains is beginning to inch up, so start working the easier creatures around 90, and leave it till 100 before you work the hardest ones. Of course if you just want to have a good time, go try them all out and decide for yourself.

90 - 100 Time to start working the bigger stuff, although the best range for gains starts to climb from here, so you can keep working some of the previous level (creatures which are easier to provoke). Sure, you can go play with those lesser creatures that are yours to command, but you only learn my stretching your boundaries, so the time has come to train in places where the balance between who wins and who dies is always in doubt.

Wind and Hythloth Level 2 Daemons are not too hard, Fire Temple will keep you busy, and Despise Level 4 should see you touring Ogre Lord Isle for good gains in relative safety - also stop by the Titans there for some variety.

100 - 110 Well, your a Grandmaster. Congratulations. What? You want to be Legendary? Sure, why not. The creatures of Brittania will bow down before you, although 1 or 2 may still wish to debate the issue when you ask them to do something. If you are determined on this course, wear your flameproof overalls - it's hot out there.

From 100 to 120, you can enjoy the challenge and provoke harder creatures, but best gains will see you staying basically in one or 2 spots. This is because the sweet spot for gains goes from about 60% at 100-105, up to around 85-90% at 115 - 120. So if you like, you can stand in Destard Felucca all day and provoke those dragons one after the other all the way to legendary. At least until 110, this is really the best place to be with a GM instrument most of the time.

110 - 120 If you're feeling a little squeamish, you can still get good gains on the 90 - 110 level spawn, although the easier ones will start to slow down after 110.

Go visit the Rotting Corpses and their undead mummy friends on Covetous Level 4 or in Ilshenar, Nox Tereg near the Humility shrine or in the Wisp Dungeon will take you all the way if you like. The Blood Dungeon will be heaven. Get those Daemons, Blood Els and Succubi into a big melee and you should have fun. Central Dungeon has all sorts of variety - I'm sure you can find some Blood Els or Lich Lords to keep you amused, or getting the Poison El and the Ki-rin to play nicely could be good for you. Of course the Pass of Karnaugh will provide hours of endless entertainment, with just about every high level creature you can find. And finally, sorcerers dungeon has some interesting creatures for you to practice your skills on.

At this level, the world is your Oyster - go crack it open, see if you can find the pearl, or just get your fingers squashed. Good Hunting.

Method 4 "Great Provocator In The Boat"
:30 - 60 Use Boat in Minoc end Provo Great Hart at our CuSidhe
:60 - 65 Good to raise the skill at Giant Serpent using the boat in the Fens of the Dead in Trinsic
:65-84 - 90 Use Boat in ToKuno near the Spawn of Tokuno end use Provo at Tsuki Wolf.
:82-90 - 110 Use the house in Tokuno, block his Cusidhe boxes, and provoke Lesser Hirue, Hirue to pet, or use a boat near the Champ Tokuno, find Spawn Hirue, and provoke Hirue on Cusidh
:96-105 - 120 Use boat in Tokuno end find Spawn Yamandon, provo him at CuSidhe on the boat. (With Exceptional Instrument end 115-120 Misicianship)
* Peacemaking
* Discordance

well, clearly, all above hints to locations not here.

first thou, train music to 100, no more, no less (see mucis topic for reasoning).

then to train provocation, ye need to find monsters, animals that average out their barding difficulty to your provocation skill, with a difference of 20 up/ 20 down, but closer to is better for gains. ye could use one high and one low critter, or 2 of the same ones, your call, its the average that counts for succeschance and thus gains.

it is one of the skills i would advice to start in with 50, thou getting up to 30 is pretty easy, from 30- to 50 is a lot harder. a good, safe spot for afk training are the 2 warhorses in the brit stables, those have 60 barding difficulty or so, so from 50 skill ye should be able to gain consistently, thou slowly (it is a slow skill to gain, long refresh timer).

alternativly, go to the solen hive and use yer skills for fun and profit there, would not advice this if provo is yer only means to take out enemies, but if ye have a backup skill, go for it, collect dem mushrooms, gems and gold, and have fun while using it. this will also teach ye valuable practice for when ye do need to get yer targets right and right now, or ye be a barbequed bard. Barding (and esp provocation) is one skill where real experience beats afk training, can ye drag bars in a hurry?, know how close they have to be to be affected? and target those 2 ye want to? how far can ye move till they will refocus on you? how long till the timer should be reset? real skill beats trained skill here.

but well, gaining it all in the flied can be a long process.

for the training safe part 2, ye will need either unicorns or skeletal mares on boats (on seperate boats), those have a barding difficulty of around 85 and have no ranged attacks so wont kill each other, or you. after that, its field experience all the way, dragons have around 110 difficulty, the greater types (skeltal, shadow or the custom ones have around 135. see my notes on music on to how to improve yer succesrate there, failure can mean being barbequed bard.

While the name, Resisting Spells, suggests that it helps with resisting all spells, this is not the case. This skill helps you lessen the severity of spells that lower your stats or ones that last for a specific duration of time. It does not prevent direct-damage spells, like Energy Bolt or Flamestrike.

Bonus to Resist at Higher Levels
At higher levels, the Resisting Spells skill also benefits you by adding a bonus to your minimum elemental resists. This bonus is only applied after all other resist modifications from what you're wearing have been calculated. It's also not cumulative. It compares the number of your minimum resists to the calculated value of your modifications and uses the higher of the two values.

For instance, if you are a Grandmaster, your minimum resists will never go below 40 (see table below). So if you happen to be wearing armor that adds 20 to each resist, the two values will not be added together; instead, it will use the highest value, which happens to be the number that your Grandmaster status gives you: 40.

If someone who doesn't have any points in Resisting Spells wears that same armor, the value of their resists will be at 20, since they will not get the resistance bonus from having the skill. The calculation of the bonus to resist is done with the following formula:

specific for UORP:

resist spells naked armour values are 45 for the elemental resists at 100, not sure at 120, also, and way more important, it raises yer max resist cap by 1 per 20 pts (so ye can have armour for 75 fire/ cold, poison and energy resist at gm resist spells (80 energy if ye are an UO elf), definelty recommended to tanks or to persons shunning armour. the naked armour values are minimum values thou, armour wont stack, but it might help ye go higher.

Chivalry
Resisting Spells is supposedly the 'complementary' skill to Chivalry - although there seems to be few places the 2 skills have any special synergy, they fit a theme of 'resisting evil', and are paired on Mark of Travesty.
Publish 48 of November 27, 2007, increased the effectiveness of Resisting Spells against the Necromancy spell Blood Oath. Resisting Spells now reduces a percentage of Blood Oath damage by the following formula:

(Resisting Spells Skill / 2) + 10 = percentage of damage resisted

Training
* 0 - 50: New Haven. In the 12 Mage's Guild shop, seek out the NPC, Alefian, to receive a quest that requires you to raise Resisting Spells to 50 through battle. At some point in the quest accelerated skill gain will activate which will result in the normal 0.1% skill increase increment to range from 0.2-0.5% lasting until the quest conditions have been satisfied. The title of the quest is Defying the Arcane and the reward is the blessed Bracelet of Resilience.
* 30 - 120: Hew Haven. Unarmed, target several Spectral Spellbinders. The more that are casting on you, the faster you can gain. Once, a damaged house to the South Southeast of the remaining Haven buildings allowed a player remain out of melee range while still subject to the Magery and Necromancy spells thrown by the Spectral Spellbinders, but no longer. However, if you venture North from, Old Haven into Weylins house, you can teleport into the corner of his bedroom, and be able to remain out of melee range, while the Spectral Spellbinder is casting spells on you. <BR> Malas. "Hook" a Crystal Elemental on the front steps of a house. This will allow you to stay out of melee range while still subject to the Magery spells thrown by the Crystal Elementals. It should be noted that while Crystal Elementals cast the Teleport spell, creatures are no longer allowed to actually teleport and therefor will stay stuck on a house's front steps. <BR> At Sea. Sea Serpents cast Magery spells and are slow enough to allow a sailor to gain Resisting Spells at a nice rate.<BR> Magery. While training Magery you can also train Resisting Spells using these cast on yourself: First Circle Weaken, Fourth Circle Mana Drain, Fifth Circle Paralyze, Seventh Circle Mana Vampire
Necromancy is the study of dark magic. With it, and a special book called the Necromancer Spellbook, you can curse your foes, animate the dead, transform into wicked creatures, and summon some of the most deadly spells in the world.

To use the skill, you simply have to cast any of the spells available to you in the spellbook. The more proficient you become at the skill, the more successful you will be at using the spells.

Wearing a good suit will greatly improve training. The most important property will be 100% Lower Reagent Cost if you don't want to use up any reagents. The next most important would be having 40% Lower Mana Cost. In addition make sure to wear 2 Faster Casting, 6 Faster Cast Recovery, and as much Mana Regeneration as you can.

necromancy has 2 schools thou, the warrior necromancer, who will use the vampiric form mostly (life leech, poison immunity, high sta regen, whats not to like?), with some curse weapon additions and maybe strangle if it is a macer, for those i would advice to train afk till 99 (no use going higher) and use the form, go out in the world advancing yer weapon skills, its then just an important background feat, ye are a big bad vampire, ye should be able to be a vampire before ye even interact with anyone (unless ye want to RP an event getting bitten). If ye are a caster necromancer thou, just use it on adventuring after getting journeyman levels (70).
Necromancy Scrolls
Necromancy scrolls cannot be purchased from NPCs; they can be looted from monsters and chests. It should be noted that only certain monsters carry certain Necromancy Scrolls.

__NOTOC__
Wizardry is a body of magic first used by the Gargoyle Race. It was added with the Stygian Abyss expansion and may be learned by all races, not just gargoyles. Similar to Spellweaving and Necromancy, Wizardry has its own unique set of magic spells cast from a Spellbook.

Focus augment the power of certain Wizardry spells.

Lore
Humans and Gargoyles worked together from a common source of magic, and the Gargoyles went on to refine their arcane arts to deal with the cataclysms destroying their world. Gargoyles have mastered the art of magic called Wizardry.

Similar to Magery, Wizardry consists of 16 spells and eight ranks that signify their power and the magic ability required to cast them. These eight concentric ranks correspond to vortices within the ether, all spinning one within another as they expand through the universe. The more powerful a spell you wish to cast, the deeper into the inner circles of ether you must penetrate. The deeper you go, the more mana (magical energy) each spell requires you to expend. Spells of the Eighth Rank require great measures of both skill and mana, while spells of the First Rank are much easier and require less energy.

Those skilled in Wizardry are known as Wizards.
Training
Wear a 100% Lower Reagent Cost suit. Desirable modifications include Lower Mana Cost, Mana Regeneration, 2 Faster Casting and 6 Faster Cast Recovery
*0 - 40 - Train at Wizardry vendor in Ter Mur
** Alternative: 0 - 30 cast Healing Stone, 30 - 40 cast Eagle Strike or Sleep on yourself
* 40 - 63 - Cast Stone Form
* 63 - 80 - Cast Cleansing Winds on yourself
* 80 - 95 - Cast Hail Storm on yourself
* 105 - 120 - Cast Nether Cyclone

See my notes on lrc and training on magery, same applies here.

Throw a fireball here, a lightning bolt there, and add a summoned daemon for good measure. Those who study the magical arts of Britannia may not be adept with a sword and shield, but few can surpass the power of a learned mage.
Training
* 0 - 30: Train at NPC Mage
When training, target an inanimate object such as anything on the ground or in your backpack to avoid causing damage. Also equip a 100% Lower Reagent Cost suit to save reagents. Other important properties include up to 40% Lower Mana Cost, having 2 Faster Casting, having 6 Faster Cast Recovery, and as much Mana Regeneration as you can. Finally, equip a Mage Weapon -29 Magery skill Wand with the Spell Channeling property. It will allow you to cast lower skill spells which are faster and consume less mana. You would need an extra faster casting to compensate for the -1 of the Spell Channeling property.
* 30 - 45: Cast Fireball
* 45 - 55: Cast Lightning (or Mana Drain for also raise Resisting Spells and Evaluating Intelligence)
* 55 - 65: Cast Paralyze
* 65 - 75: Cast Reveal
* 75 - 90: Cast Flamestrike (or Mana Vampire for also raise Resisting Spells and Evaluating Intelligence)
* 90 - 120: Cast Earthquake

note, the 100% lrc is nonsense, 25% and up will do fine, so, a lot of spells will fail due to no reagents, but will also consume no mana, with 100 lrc ye will run out of mana all the time, with less ye will not do that so much. just do drop off all reagents when training with less than 100%. if ye combine magery with necromancy, going into licheform is highly recommended for the great mana regeneration increase (if will hurt you but never kill you), go for FCR/ FC and LMC before lrc once ye have that 25% or more.

Do note thou, personally, unless ye really have a char background being a famous accomplished archmage, dont bother going to do town training above 65/70 skill or so, go out, explore, have fun, once ye can reliably cast a good assortiment of spells, use them where they should be used, on monsters, the road to perfection is more fun than archiving it waiting.

That fellow, or lass, with pockets overflowing with bits of metal, scraps of ore, and widgets and trinkets of various shapes and sizes may be your local tinker. Tinkers of Britannia may create a wide variety of tools, traps, trinkets and other items to brighten the houses and keeps of Britannia.

Tinkering is the skill that could be considered central to all creativity in Ultima Online - The ability to fashion tools for use with the other trades makes it a good starting point for any up-and-coming crafter. For example, it allows a miner to create more Shovels as he works. These tools often do not require high levels of skill to create, so not all crafters need to be Grand Master tinkerers to get an advantage - Though Exceptionally crafted tools do last longer...

Tinkers may also create magic jewelry, some of which are classified as artifacts. It's recommended to train your skill in Heartwood so as to obtain the recipes required prior to actually needing them.

With enough skill, your characters may even assemble obedient Golems to do their bidding in battle. While not often used in real combat situations, their extreme poison resistance makes them prized by fighters wishing to train their combat skills.

Usually Tinkers work with ingots, though on occasion they create items out of wood as well.

Training
You will require a set of Tinker's Tools to practice your trade. As your skill progresses, you should create:
* 0 - 40: Train from Amelia Youngstone in New Haven
* 40 - 45: Scissors (2 ingots each)
* 45 - 60: Tongs' (1 ingot each, sell to blacksmith or tinker)
* 60 - 75: Lockpicks (1 ingot each, sell to provisioner)
* 75 - 85: Bracelets (3 ingots each, sell to jeweler)
* 85 - 90: Spyglasss (4 ingots each, sell to shipwright)
* 90 - 95: Rings (3 ingots each, sell to jewelers)
* 95 - 100: Scales and Spyglasses (4 ingots each) - Alternated every 500 Ingots

It is also a good idea to do the The Right Tool for the Job quest in New Haven for accelerated skill gain to 50 skill and you will receive Amelia's Toolbox.

For a power gaming technique to train this skill see Satyr Trick

specific for UORP:

rings and bracelets are no regular recipes, but are custom ones, chances are ye wont have those and i believe their difficulty is different here anyway

tinkering above 100: usefull if ye want to make thropies, traps and guaranteed except tools, for training there ye will need to make fancy chimes or nunchaku's (i advice nunchaku's, since those are sellable).

also do look at the trap crafting toolkit, they are nice thou a pain to make with all their parts.
Tinkering shines in making runic jewelry peices and trinkets thou ye need another sources (smithing or tailoring) to get the tradecoins for the runics, those reallycan be very nice. another thing is making blank 4 or 5 socket trinkets for glyphs, a miner just wants +6 mining for smelting chances and a smith just smithing for a better succesrate.

runic crafted jewelry can have skill mods, that is waht makes them so nice to use runics on.

Tinker-Made Weapons
While blacksmiths make most of the in-game weapons, Tinkers make a few items of combat as well:

|
*Cleaver
*Nunchaku
*Pickaxe
*Hatchet
|
*Sledge Hammer
*Smith's Hammer
*Skinning Knife
*Butcher Knife

These items are seldom used in combat as no Runic Tools are available to Tinkers. This prevents them from adding powerful Item Properties.

Ever have one of those mornings where you just couldn’t bear to put on the same tunic yet again? With skill in Tailoring, you can make clothing of all styles, colors and patterns, and show off your taste in fashion!

While many items created by Tailors are of Cloth, as your skill improves you may learn special Tailoring Recipes and create armor out of exotic forms of Leather or even Bones.

Sadly, the "dressing up" side of Ultima Online is somewhat neglected as many players simply opt to wear Robes over their armor. Nevertheless, with a bit of imagination and a Dying Tub at hand, some fairly impressive costumes can be designed.

There is a special collection of Bulk Order Deeds available for Tailors to fill out. Returning these provides specially colored cloth and other items as rewards. For the Tailor in training, this extra cloth can be used to fill yet more BODs, extending the amount of time before you need to go and collect more resources to work with - For advanced players, Power Scrolls and Runic Sewing Kits may be earnt.

Experienced Tailors can create Arcane Clothing which stores charges of magic power, allowing the wearer to cast spells without reagents.

Training
Here's a general list of what to make, but you could start your character with 50 tailoring skill - Save some time and gold. You'll need a Sewing Kit to work with. Also keep a pair of Scissors on hand, or perhaps a Salvage Bag - These can be used to recycle many items back into usable resources.

* 0.0 - 29.0: Buy it from an NPC Tailor
* 29.0 - 41.4: Short Pants (6 Cloth)
* 41.4 - 54: Cloaks (14 Cloth)
* 54 - 72: Robes (16 Cloth)
* 72 - 78: Ninja Tabi (10 Cloth) (This will save some cloth until oil cloth is craftable.)
* 78 - 110: Oil Cloths (1 Cloth) (This part is very slow at times) I have found you can get faster gains in the 90's by making Elven Shirts. They can also be sold back to the tailors for a small profit.
* 110 - 115.0: Cloth Ninja Hoods (13 Cloth)
* 115.0 - 120.0: Studded Hiro Sode (8 Leather)

For a power gaming technique to train this skill see Satyr Trick

An alternative method

* 110 - 117 Gargish Cloth Kilt 6 cloth each (may work to 120) *Confirmed on OSI Shard to 120 4/21/10
* 117 - 120 Gargish Cloth Arms 8 cloth each

specific for UORP:

after the oilcloth, look for one of the 2 elven shirt options in yer sewing kit, one of them gains succesrate slower and can take ye to 120 (thou slow at times). like smiths, the recipes add an option to make belts, these are another armour piece.

while training tailoring, do store all 5 socket piece ye make in the category robe, cloak, kilt, shirt, sash and boots. while the socket properties on clothing aint as powerfull as on armour pieces in most instances, it all adds up and those 6 pieces ye can all stack on top of your normal armour. later ye will be looking for some of those, or others are, and a nice 5 socket clothing piece can easily fetch 1000 gold or so.

tailoring tradequests require you to use leather, go hike along on a hunter doing dragons for the quest points or profit and skin the hides (ye need a skinning knife, but well, everyone needs those anyway). the high end leathertyypes are:

Strong leather (needs 105 tailoring to use) drops from kraken and serpentine dragons
reinforced leather (110) drops from white wyrms, skeletal dragons, shadow wyrms
hardened leather (115) drops from crimson dragons, dragon 2 (custom dragon, ye know it when ye see it) and the black dragon
pristine leather (120) drops only from 3 bosses, the elder black dragon, rikkitor and kelp'hiron.

Do not count on seeing much pristine if ye are not in hunting parties for those, the other leather types are common enough, thou strong might be harder to find than hardened and reinforced (hunting krakens is hard, and serpentine dragons do not spawn in great ammounts).

Inscribed in a steady hand and imbued with the power of reagents, a scroll can mean the difference between life and death in a perilous situation. Those knowledgeable in Inscription may transcribe spells to create useful magical scrolls.

In order to copy a spell to Scroll form, you need to be carrying a spellbook which already contains that spell. A scribe with high Magery skill can create Spellbooks with extra Item Properties - Skills bonuses, Slayer effects, and Lower Reagent Cost among others. Inscription Recipes, however, are required to Craft some such items.

The direct use of Inscription on a standard Book can be used to quickly create an exact copy. Their contents can then be locked with the use of Red Leaves; this process is handy for creating "advertising leaflets" for player run events and auctions.

A GM Scribe gains a +10% Spell Damage Increase to any Magery spells cast.

Caster's inscription skill also affects following spells:
*Protection: Allows you to cast spells without being interrupted.

:Lowers physical resistance 15% - (Inscription/20). At GM inscription, Physical lowers 10%.

:Lowers resist magic skill 35% - (Inscription/20). At GM Inscription, Resist lowers 30%

:Increases spell casting delay. ( Inscription has no effect here )
*Reactive Armor: Increases Physical Resistance ( +15% + Inscription/20 ) , decreases elemental resistances (-5% each).

: With 0 Inscription (+15 , -5 , -5 , -5 ,-5)

: At GM Inscription (+20 , -5 ,-5 , -5 , -5)
*Magic Reflection: Decreases Physical Resistance ( -25% + Inscription/20 ), increases elemetal resistances ( +10% each).

: With 0 Inscription (-25 , +10 , +10 , +10 , +10)

: At GM Inscription (-20 , +10 , +10 , +10 , +10)

It should be noted that the Jack of All Trades for humans works as if they had 20 Inscription skill points.

Training
Before training you will need to obtain many thousands of Blank Scrolls and Reagents. Exact numbers will be added in the future. Scribe's Pens are used for all craftables.

Buying scrolls and reagents from vendors is the easiest, and sometimes, the cheapest way to go. You can buy out a particular vendor of their wares.

* 0 - 30: Buy from a NPC Mage or Scribe.
* 30 - 55: Make 4th circle scrolls.
* 55 - 65: Make 5th circle scrolls.
* 65 - 85: Make 6th circle scrolls.
* 85 - 94: Make 7th circle scrolls.
* 94 - 100: Make 8th circle scrolls.

For a power gaming technique to train this skill see Satyr Trick

specific for UORP:

spellbooks are nice to make, and a recipe is needed. thou even at 120 inscription (just keep on making circle 8 scrolls) ye wont have a perfect succes rate, about half of the books will be blank (no modification) and maybye 10% is nice. at 100 scrolls AND 100 pulp (needs water and 200 boards and another recipe or cooking skill) they are dang resource intense to make thou. but well, a few slayer spellbooks are also dang nice on the other hand. do note you can socket slayer gems into spellbooks and thus give a book with nice mods an added slayer bonus.
also, only bother to make either magery or wizardy spellbooks, since sorcery and necromancy books are not held in the hand while casting in general. a high skill in the magic scholl ye are crafting books for is recommended for better mods. spellbook mods can go up to 12 in the relevant skills (magery, eval int and meditation for magery books) up to 6^LMC, 6 int and 15 or so LRC as well as 2 FC/FCR, and off course a slayer mod and up to 9 SDI or so.

Another feature of inscription is the ability to make glyphs, these act like craftable socket gems for trinkets only, their main advantage is that the socket gems for skills are pretty hard to find, while they are easily crafted, for mining or smithing or any other crafter for example. crafting glyphs does have a crossover with alchemy since it uses crushed gems which is a custom alchemy recipe.
Whether sweating over a fiery forge to create a masterpiece or hammering dents and polishing scratches from a favored piece of plate mail, the blacksmith of Britannia is a skilled craftsman who often finds his or her services in high demand.

The skill of Blacksmithy involves: smelting metal items and ores; crafting arms and armaments; enhancing certain metal items; and repairing applicable items.

There is a special collection of Bulk Order Deeds available for Smiths to fill out. Returning these provides special mining tools and other items as rewards. For the Smith in training, these can help speed the time it takes to acquire more ingots - For advanced players, Power Scrolls and Runic Hammers may be earned.

A skilled character may learn special Blacksmithy Recipes in order to create yet more powerful weapons.

UO Roleplay Specific
* When smelting down items you must use the right blacksmithing tool. For example if you are smelting down a custom shield you need to use the smelting tool that is used to create that type of shield.

Smelting
The process for smelting ores and recycling metal items into their constituent ingots differs.

Ores
* Stand near a forge.
* Double-click the ore pile you wish to smelt into ingots.
* Target the forge.

Metal Items
The manual, or old school, method of smelting, or recycling, metal items into their constituent ingots involves:
* Double-click a smith’s hammer, tongs, or sledgehammer that is located in your backpack.
* A menu will appear.
* Select the Smelt Item button in the lower left-hand corner.
* Target the item you wish to melt into ingots. (If smelting self-crafted items, will yield half of ingots used to create the item.)

The UOAssist Recycle Agent feature and the Salvage Bag have made the above process <i>far</i> easier.

Crafting
To create an item using the Blacksmithy skill:
* Stand near a forge and anvil (either, alone is insufficient).
* Double-click a smith’s hammer, tongs, or sledgehammer that is located in your backpack.
* A menu will appear displaying the different categories of items you can craft.
* Select a category and click on the button next to the item you wish to craft.

For arms, there are three categories: Bashing, Bladed, and Polearm.

If successful, the crafted item will appear in your backpack. If successful and lucky, the crafted item will be exceptional. A Blacksmith can opt to include his or her maker’s mark on such exceptional items. The crafting menu contains a toggle in the lower right-hand corner to turn the maker’s mark option on or off.

A blacksmith may increase his or her chances by using an Ancient Hammer.

* Exceptional Damage Bonus is 23%

Enhancing Arms & Armaments
To enhance an item using the Blacksmithy skill:
* Stand near a forge and anvil (either, alone is insufficient).
* Stock you backpack with the metal type you wish to utilize.
* Double-click a smith’s hammer, tongs, or sledgehammer that is located in your backpack.
* A crafting menu will appear.
* Select the appropriate metal type and click on the Enhance Item button located in the lower-right of the menu.
* Target the item you wish to enhance.

Instead of "enhancing", many Blacksmiths refer to this process as "destroying".

Repairing
Temporary link, see the Increasing Current Durability section of the Durability article.

Training
See George Hephaestus, the Blacksmith Instructor, at the Forge And Anvil in New Haven. The New Player Quest entitled It's Hammer Time! will allow a character to train Blacksmithing to 50 (and get the sweet reward, Hammer of Hephaestus). The New Player Quests use accelerated skillgain.

Use a Crystal Ball of Knowledge when training. This will tell you whether the making an item will yield "Optimal" training or not. Using this technique, you can keep switching to making different items as you gain, and can do far better than the chart below.

* 40.0-45.0: Mace
* 45.0-50.0: Maul
* 50.0 - 55.0: Cutlass
* 55.0 - 59.5: Longsword or Katana
* 59.5 - 70.5: Scimitar or Spear
* 70.5 - 106.4: Platemail Gorget (Note: Gains are tremendously slow from here on out. It may help to switch from the Platemail Gorget to the Platemail Gloves every now and then.)
* 106.4 - 108.9: Platemail Gloves
* 108.9 - 116.3: Platemail Arms
* 116.3 - 118.8: Platemail Legs
* 118.8 - 120: Platemail Tunics

* It takes about five days of non-stop game play and over 100,000 ingots to gain 120 Blacksmithy skill points using this technique, so take a break from time to time. You're not a machine! Items produced during training are smelted, or recycled, into ingots for further training.
* Mining of over 50.0 will help cut costs a lot because it allows you to smelt and mine your own ore. Higher levels of mining also increase your return when salvaging.
* Using a Salvage Bag is absolutely crucial, as it both speeds up recycling (recycling everything inside within a second) as well as giving one extra ingot per item recycled, which can represent a monumental return on items that only take a few ingots to make in the first place.
* A modicum of Tinkering will allow you to craft your own Blacksmithy tools.

Using a power scroll to increase your Blacksmithing skill early in your progression can improve your 'rate of return' when salvaging items by extending the range at which you can gain skill on any individual item. Normally, your skill gain ceases at the point where your chance to create the item reaches 100%, which corresponds to 50 points above the minimum skill needed to create the item. If X is that skill level, then this point is (X + 50). The power scrolls raise this cap in direct correlation to their strength. Thus, a 105 power scroll rases the cap to 105% (X + 52.5); a 110 scroll to 110% (X + 55); a 115 scroll to 115% (X + 57.5); and a 120 scroll to 120% (X + 60).

Thus, if your character has used a Legendary Scroll of Blacksmithy early in their career (and if you have the expansions installed), you may instead consider this alternate progression chart designed to maximize your skill return per ingot:
* 47.5 - 75.0: Kryss
* 75.1 - 89.9: Shuriken (requires the Samurai Empire expansion)
* 90.0 - 100: Circlet (requires the Mondain's Legacy expansion)
* 100.1 - 120: Royal Circlet (requires the Mondain's Legacy expansion)

specific on UO RP

really, do the last option, circlets at 6 ingots each are a bargain to train on. see the armslore section as well.

count on using 15000 to 25000 ingots to reach legendary smith (really a bargain). for aspiring smiths, i would advice to seek out a mentor, its nice to RP that, gets yer crafter into the world instead of a nameless crafter mule, but also since smiths have very easy acces to tradecoins and can help ye get the mining and smithing powerscrolls easily, while ye can repay that later once ye got the skill up (they are also in general swimming in ingots of the agapite, verite and valorite type which they find to much work to use for tradequests, but you can do while learning). of special note are the added armour pieces namely belts, these are a 7th piece for a character, and are only available as recipes, get one of those asap.

Arms Lore is a skill used in the crafting of certain items and to identify the condition of a weapon. However as to the latter use, any character can determine the same information via the item's tooltip.

* Professional Title: Warrior
* Maximum Skill Possible: 120
* NPC Trainers: Armorer, Blacksmith, Blacksmith Guildmaster, Weaponsmith, Weapons Trainer, Fighter, Warrior, Mercenary, Paladin, Merchant Guildmaster, and Warrior Guildmaster.

Arms Lore was no longer considered a "Useless" skill as of Publish 44 which was released in April of 2007. It now compliments the crafting of armor and weapons in the following ways.
* Gives a +3% Damage Increase bonus to all exceptionally crafted weapons for every 20 skill points (up to +17% at 120 skill).
* Gives +3% in random resistance on exceptionally crafted armor at 120 skill. 6 armor peaces X +3 = +18 to your total armor. This will stack with better resources types greatly increasing your total armor on crafted items.
** these bonuses apply to all crafted weapons (metal or wood) and armors (leather, metal, and wood);
** these bonuses stack, or combine, with properties imparted by Runic Tools.
** these bonuses stack, or combine, with resource type bonuses

Training
Active
* 0 - 30: Unlike several skills, there is no accelerated skillgain quest for Arms Lore. Train at an NPC Blacksmith, Armorer, or Warrior Guildmaster
* 30 - 100: Activate the skill, see below. It will take roughly 25 hours to reach 100.0 skill. There is a chance to gain every time the skill is used so you do not have to switch your target or move around. Training can be sped up by using a Scroll of Alacrity and/or training while discorded by a Satyr.

Active Use
To use Arms Lore you can either create a Macro, take out the Skill Gump Icon, or press the blue button next to its name in the Skill Gump. Doing so will bring up a targeting cursor and a system message asking, "What item do you wish to get information about?"

One of the easier ways is to set create about 200 daggers, secure them in your house as this will be too many too hold, and using Razor, create a macro using Arms Lore, then target a dagger. After this, right click the "Abosolute Target" in your macro, and select "Target by Type." This will randomly select any of the 200 daggers so long as you remain standing near them.

Target the piece of weapon or armor you want to learn about. There are two possible outcomes:
* Failure - A system message says, "You are not certain..."
* Success - A system message says, "You study the item in an attempt to learn more about its craftsmanship and use."

Passive
Arms Lore also may be gained by constructing weapons or armor, but not shields nor ammunition. There are five skills which allow this: Blacksmithing, Tailoring, Carpentry, Tinkering, and Bowcraft.

Specific for UO RP:

armslore bonusses, 1% DI per 5 skill on top of a base of 16% DI at 0 skill exceptionally crafted weapons (20% DI for a Jack of all trades smith)
1% random armour resist boost per 20 skill (up to 6% at 120 armslore).

Armslore affects blacksmithing, tailoring, carpentry, tinkering, fletching and imbuing (only for the weapon and armour crafting/ artifact armour for imbuing off course).

thou the powerscrolls for this skill are not considered tradecoin ones (ye cannot buy them cheap for tradecoins that is, the questpoints are worth it for a dedicated crafter, this investment will set ye a stage higher from crafters who do not have it, a crafter without armslore at at least GM level is really a waste of good material.

examining a weapon for a few hours gets ye at gm or above, fast and cheap to train afk.

History
Arms Lore used to be required in order to preform the Wrestling special moves Stun and Disarm. This requirement was dropped with the Age of Shadows expansion.

The following tables show the information Arms Lore used to give when the skill was used to assess in-game items.
Interesting fact: If you brush some dust off a corpse and grind it just a little finer... You get one of the most explosive substances known to man.

Alchemists in Ultima Online do not turn lead into gold; instead, they create magic potions. High level Alchemists can learn Glassblowing, and with Alchemy Recipes, craft 3 special potions and 1 decorative item.

As your skill improves you gain a Enhance Potions bonus of 10% for every 33 skill points achieved (30% at GM). This is on top of any bonus given by your equipment and hence not subject to your equipment cap (granting you a maximum benefit of 80%).

Trained alchemists can identify the contents of Potion Kegs by removing a potion from them. Once checked in this way, the potion type becomes visible to all players.

Training
You will need dozens of empty Potion Kegs, hundreds of Mortar and Pestles, an Empty Bottle, and these reagents:
* 2,500 Black Pearl
* 2,500 Blood Moss
* 5,000 Mandrake Root
* 10,000 Ginseng
* 20,000 Garlic
* 14,000 Grave Dust

When you make your first potion, dump it into an empty Potion Keg located in your backpack by dropping the potion on it. Each subsequent potion of that kind made after that will automatically be added to that keg. Click Make Max on the specific potion's description page to make the Max number of potions automatically. Once the keg is full, your bottles will be filled as well. Grab a new empty keg, and dump the potions into the new keg, and keep filling kegs this way until you reach the next level of potions to make. Having a Crystal Ball of Knowledge will help you to achieve optimal skill gain.

For a power gaming technique to train this skill see Satyr Trick

Excess Greater Heal, Greater Cure, Greater Strength and Greater Poison potions have a market with players into Gardening as those potions are used with growing plants.

Specific for UORP:

when training up alchemy try to get some of the custom recipes for some of the reagent powders, once you get to the skill levels where you need mutiple reagents to make a potion, grinding reagents into dust is a way easier and cheaper way to gain the skill, there are different grindable reagents and they have different skill requirements. to effectifly train this skill, get some of the custom containers, a reagent satchel, a powder bag and a potion case. the potion case is to be able to combine a lot of mortars into one with up to 60000 charges, and it will be nice for storing your product later on. The reagent satchel to have easy acces without weight issues to your reagents and the powder bag to store your powders (all custom potions need a combination of a grinded plant powder, a grinded gem powder and a herblore (taste id) harvested plant, so why not store yer grinded grave dust for later use in rebirth potions for example?.

Grinding spider silk can get you to GM level for 1 reagent each time (i think it was spider silk, check in yer pestle which one is the right one, they have different difficulties), which is a lot cheaper than the above mentioned method. After GM level its either expensive gems (diamonds, rubies or emeralds) glassblowing (if ye have the patience to mine for sand, believe me, that is a pain) or making deadly poison. using the deadly poison method (after wasting a lot of time on mining sand, do not do that, really, do not, at 10 secs a dig, about 10% chance of finding good sand then and having to move after 8 to 15 succesfull finds, its well, no fun at all).

stock up on nightshade, get a mortar with some 2k charges (see potion bag combination trick) a lot of nightshade and a potion bag, start grinding, I estimate around 10k nightshade did the trick for me, ending up with 4 full kegs of deadly poison (ye only have a 20% chance at GM on that, 60% at legendary).

Is going for 120 worth it? yes, since it is a tradeskill, getting powerscrolls is relativly cheap (70 tradecoins for a +5 cap scroll is a bargain compared to 35 quest points) and the increase on succesrate for the custom potions is immense (some of those use very rare gem powder like arcane gems, large rubies etc, a failure while using that is pretty harsh)

"A wise poison master never licks his fingers."

Subtler than an impaling sword, poisoning food and drink has long been a method of choice for the discerning assassin. For those with a flair for the dramatic, Poison can be applied to the blade of a weapon to swiftly bring an enemy to defeat in battle.

Along with the ability to poison weapons and food, higher levels of this skill improve the effectiveness of the Poison and Poison Field spells.

Poisoning takes the place of Tactics in determining the probability to perform poison Special Moves - These are Infectious Strike and Serpent Arrow. However, you must have a weapon skill of at least 70 to activate primary move weapons and at least 90 to activate secondary move weapons. The item property of Mage Weapon does not act as a substitute for a weapon skill when it comes to special moves.

Previously, a weapon that had been poisoned could be used by anyone and would have a chance to poison a target with each hit.

One of the criticisms of the Poisoning skill is that nearly any use of a Greater Cure potion or Arch Cure spell in PvP combat would render a successful poisoning of a target useless. Poisoning remains very useful in PvM and roleplaying, however.

Training
Unlike most skills, there is no accelerated skill gain New Player Quest for poisoning. But still, one no longer must train poisoning the old way in which many different targets had to be poisoned. Players may poison the same weapon or food item again and again to gain skill. Poisoning can be expensive and time-consuming to raise. One estimate is that reaching GM Poisoning requires about 80,000 Nightshade worth of various poisons.

The recommended type of poison to use for training is:
* 0 - 30: Train at an NPC Thief Guildmaster
* 30 - 40: Apply Lesser Poison
* 40 - 70: Apply Poison
* 70 - 92: Apply Greater Poison
* 92 - 100: Apply Deadly Poison

The skill ranges listed above also apply to the level of poison you may apply during the Infectious Strike/Serpent Arrow weapon skills. Using these abilities will also cause you to gain in poisoning. With each attempt to apply poison to a weapon or food item there is a chance for the player to accidentally poison themselves, so having a few Cure potions on-hand is recommended (especially when first moving on to a higher level of poison).

For a power gaming technique to train this skill see the Satyr Trick.

When you reach 70 in a melee skill, you have a chance of gaining in poisoning whenever you use the Infectious Strike special move; Tactics is not required. When you reach 90 in Archery and Tactics, you have a chance of gaining in poisoning when you use the Serpent Arrow special move.

Alchemy skill is required to produce poison from Nightshade. Many aspiring poisoners purchase poison by the keg-full from other players if they do not possess high levels of Alchemy.

addition specific for UORP:
due to alchemy capping out at 120 instead of 100 and such a 60% succes rate on crafting deadly poison opposed to 20% on normal UO, the nightshade costs are drastically lower, also, and estimate on poison usage on a test subject, keg usage seems to be around halve here than regular (as with most skills, more skillchecks means less training pain). As of yet I have no idea IF training this skill above 120 has any use, at most to reduce application failure rate for high end poisons, at GM level one should have a 100% chance off applying a higher level dosage at using it.

Weapons
Standard weapons with the Infectious Strike/Serpent Arrow moves can be used to inflict Poison.

Prior to the introduction of these Special Moves, poison could be applied to most any weapon and inflicted by simply hitting your targets with it. Weapons coated this way would lose Durability as the poison corroded them, but could be cleaned with an Oil Cloth.

Now days, only Infectious Strike weapons, Shuriken and Fukiya Darts can still be poisoned in the original manner, and corrosion is no longer in effect. The Serpent Arrow move requires no actual poison (either on the weapon or in your pack) but requires high levels of Dexterity to be effective.

Throwing a Shuriken/Fukiya Dart will apply the poison regardless of your skill level. To use other weapons that have been poisoned, you must specifically activate the Infectious Strike move.

Having a high enough level of Poisoning skill can allow you to inflict a level of poison higher then that on the weapon.

Fencing
Stabbing weapons are of course the ideal delivery method when it comes to infecting targets. These items can each created by Blacksmiths. Due to the large variety of poisonable weapons available to Fencers (at least, compared to other weapon skills), this skill could be considered the most popular choice.
Only one archery weapon set can be used to inflict poison attacks on enemies, however the ability to strike at long distance is a perk not to be ignored. These are craftable by Bowyers and are Two-Handed Weapons.

Note that the Serpent Arrow move requires no poison either on your weapon or in your pack to use, but requires very high levels of Poisoning and Dexterity in order to inflict anything higher then Lesser Poison.
