UO Roleplay Lore

Welcome to the UO Roleplay's Shard Lore Compendium. Please take a moment to read the credits and thanks at the bottom of this page.

As many may know, there was but one Gem of Immortality and when the Hero from Another World shattered it to destroy the evil wizard Mondain he was certainly not expecting to find that the Gem which had so recently held all of Sosaria within its power was now hundreds of shards, each with its own vision of Sosaria captured within. The Hero was wise and gathered the pieces of the Gem. He recovered all of them save three but those three are another story. He returned the shards to Lord British who had called him to this task. And then the Hero departed for his home-world and left a troubled Lord British to muse over the pieces of the Gem.

Time passed but no answers came until one stormy night when Lord British was confronted by the Timelord, a being that has ever sought to protect Sosaria and perhaps many other worlds from destruction. It was revealed unto Lord British that though Mondain was defeated for all time and the enslaving power of the Gem broken as surely as the crystal itself was shattered, the ancient and foul arcana called up by that old wizard had not evaporated. Indeed, each shard contained a real Sosaria with living, breathing, struggling people. Each was separate from the others and from the one true Sosaria; a hundred worlds all in danger of falling into the darkness of oblivion.

The Timelord forewarned Lord British of the true Sosaria that all the shards must be brought together not as a new Gem but singular in purpose and righteous community. He warned the noble ruler of Britannia that this must be done else the corrupting power of the Gem of Immortality would bring an end to all the shards and the Sosaria in which they existed.

With the guidance of his morals and the superior magecraft of the court wizard Nystul, Lord British had the shards studied, catelogued and even visited. To his dismay it was soon learned that the shards were quickly darkening, the fine mineral from which they were carved growing smoky as wars and depravation raged through them. Though none were easily lost to darkness, ever they sat upon the brink.

Among the shards was one named Fracture. It took its name from the three-way split coursing through it, marring and obscuring the Sosaria within. It has ever puzzled the Britannian scholars entrusted with this grave secret. All that they know for certain is that it is in some ways closest to the brink and that it has come to contain more than just Sosaria. Indeed, if it were not for the clear seen continent of Britannia the sages might have thought it were another world entirely.

Welcome to Fracture.

All that follows is a re-imagining of the Ultima single-player game experience without the focus on the Avatar. All of the concepts and ideas that follow are thanks to the very imaginative development teams of the Ultima series of games that started out back around 1980. And don't let us forget that while EA has literally thousands of people to please on paid accounts their development and maintenance of Ultima Online have helped make UO Roleplay possible.
